Originally established as the Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo (HRC), it has a long history dating back to the early 1980s and has evolved to become a significant part of Western New York’s cultural landscape.

The center officially opened on March 18, 1984, with support from the Buffalo Jewish Federation, state grants, and private foundations. Over the years, it has operated under various leadership, including notable directors such as Elizabeth Schram from 2019 onwards.
In 2023, the organization underwent a transition, rebranding as the Holocaust Education Resource Organization (HERO), aligning with its evolving mission to emphasize education and community resources in the face of new challenges.
Activities
The organization engages in a wide range of activities to achieve its mission:
- Educational Outreach: It conducts in-school visits, presentations, and workshops to educate students and adults about the Holocaust.

The Mission of the Holocaust Education Resource Organization is to Remember the survivors and victims Teach the lessons of the Holocaust Empower future generations to take action History of HERO In 1983 with the support of the Buffalo Jewish Federation and a nonsectarian group of founders Toby Ticktin Back brought the dream of a permanent way to honor and remember the survivors of the Holocaust to life when the Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo HRC became part of the cultural landscape of Western New York. HRCs mission was achieved through documentation and personal testimony of local holocaust survivors educating future generations with inschool visits and presentations and through a wide range of inservice workshops. In 2023 as we recognize that the world our nation and our community have changed and we have new challenges the Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo transitioned to the Holocaust Education Resource Organization HERO to emphasize our importance of providing education and resources to the community.
