The Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public about the Holocaust, honoring its survivors and victims, and promoting social justice. Originally established as the Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo (HRC), it has a long history dating back to the early 1980s and has evolved to become a significant part of Western New York’s cultural landscape.

History
The Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo was initiated in 1983 through a collaborative effort involving a non-sectarian group of founders, including Holocaust survivors and educators like Toby Ticktin Back. The center officially opened on March 18, 1984, with support from the Buffalo Jewish Federation, state grants, and private foundations. Over the years, it has operated under various leadership, including notable directors such as Elizabeth Schram from 2019 onwards.
In 2023, the organization underwent a transition, rebranding as the Holocaust Education Resource Organization (HERO), aligning with its evolving mission to emphasize education and community resources in the face of new challenges.
Activities
The organization engages in a wide range of activities to achieve its mission:
- Educational Outreach: It conducts in-school visits, presentations, and workshops to educate students and adults about the Holocaust.
- Descendants Group: Provides a platform for descendants of survivors to share their family stories and histories.
- Commemorative Events: Organizes public events to honor survivors and victims, promoting remembrance and reflection.
