Willow Creek Railroad

Overview

Willow Creek Railroad is a nonprofit organization located at Powerland Heritage Park. It began as a small attraction in 1975, initiated by two individuals who shared an interest in live steam modeling. Over the years, it has expanded into a significant facility with a large-scale model railroad, providing a historical experience through its live steam and diesel-powered trains.

History

The organization formally established itself as part of Powerland Heritage Park in 1993 and gained nonprofit status in 1997. Initially, it started with a 600-foot loop of track. By the mid-1990s, the layout had grown to approximately 2,500 feet, featuring various structures such as a carbarn, roundhouse, bridges, and a creek with landscaping. In 1998, plans were initiated to significantly expand the track length, culminating in over 5,500 feet of track by 2001. This expansion allowed for the operation of larger live steam locomotives and enhanced the overall experience by mimicking a prototypical railroad.

Operations and Features

The railroad operates on a 7 ½” gauge track with trains scaled at 1:8, allowing passengers to ride and experience the sights and sounds of early steam and diesel railroading. The museum has continued to upgrade its facilities, including additional storage for trains, new carbarns, roundhouses, period station covers, and a block signal system with bridges. These upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to provide a historical and educational experience.

Nonprofit Status

Willow Creek Railroad is a 501(c)(3) organization, making donations eligible for federal income tax deduction as charitable contributions. The organization relies on volunteers for all aspects of its operations and appreciates contributions in the form of time, talent, and financial support.

Future Projects

Among its future plans, the museum is focused on the preservation and restoration of significant railroad artifacts, such as the Union Pacific Railroad Caboose #25527. Additionally, it aims to enhance its signal system and develop the East Side Industrial Loop, further enriching the visitor experience.

Large ScaleModel Railroading WCRR was founded in 1975 as a place where live steamers could gather to share their interests in trains and enjoy outdoor miniature railroading. We are dedicated to providing a historical account of what early steam and diesel railroading was like the smells sights and sounds only on a smaller scale. Our steam and diesel powered trains are 18 scale replicas large enough for the whole family to ride. We hope to see you soon.
