The alarming rise in the prevalence of autism developmental disabilities and other special needs over the past 30 years compels us to recognize that our current system does not adequately support the large wave of individuals with special needs entering adulthood. Individuals with IDD fall off the cliffwhen they turn 22 and they get thrown into a system that is underprepared and underfunded leaving many families scrambling. As a result there is a critical need to address the shortage of supportive housing and services for adults with special needs.
