The JHBG Tree team is growing a Mini Native Forest at P.S. 69. On Saturday we added one of the last major pieces, the groundcover level of our woodland. This isn't any ordinary forest— its small, but more important is it's made up of native plants, the kind that have been growing across NYC and vicinity for centuries. They, in turn, attract all sorts of beneficial critters, such as bees and butterflies, that evolved with them over the same time period. Just think, the plants growing on the former lawn on the school's 77th Street side may have been growing sometime in the past, if not in the same spots, not very far away.
