ASIFA-Hollywood
ASIFA-Hollywood is a California-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and encouraging the art and craft of animation. It is a branch member of the International Animated Film Association.
Formation and Founders
ASIFA-Hollywood was formed in the early days following the founding of the International Animated Film Association, which was established in Annecy, France in 1957. The organization was officially chartered by a group of animation professionals including Bill Scott, Stephen Bosustow, Ward Kimball, William T. Hurtz, Les Goldman, and Bill Littlejohn. Notable early members also included June Foray, renowned as the voice of "Rocky the Flying Squirrel," and later as a president and influential figure in the organization.
Goals and Mission
ASIFA-Hollywood aims to support and encourage animation education, preserve and critically evaluate the history of the animation industry, recognize excellence in animation, increase public awareness about animation, facilitate the exchange of ideas within the animation community, encourage journalism covering animation trends, foster social interaction among animation enthusiasts, and promote all forms of animation.
The Annie Awards
One of ASIFA-Hollywood's most significant events is the annual Annie Awards, which began in 1972. Initially designed to honor lifetime achievements in animation, the awards have evolved to recognize outstanding animated productions and individual contributions to the field each year. Members participate in the nomination and voting processes.
Film Preservation
Through its Animation Preservation Project, ASIFA-Hollywood works to save endangered cartoons by preserving them on safer film stock and digital formats. This initiative is crucial for maintaining the historical integrity of early animated films, many of which were originally on unstable nitrate film.
Recent Activities and Governance
As of 2022, the organization's leadership includes Sue Shakespeare as President. ASIFA-Hollywood continues to host various events and screenings, including workshops and mixers, throughout the year to support its mission of promoting and recognizing excellence in animation.
