Civil Air Patrol

For more than 50 years, the Civil Air Patrol has aggressively performed the missions Congress mandated in 1946: Aerospace Education, Cadet Programs, and Emergency Services.Aerospace EducationAmerica's love of manned flight started with the Wright brothers and continues unabated during this century. World War II showcased the important role aviation would play in the future and national leaders recognized the importance of stimulating public interest in aerospace activities.CAP, as the civilian Auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, was most suited to perform this mission. Their efforts focused on two different audiences - internal CAP members and the general public. Aerospace educators working out of CAP's National Headquarters at Maxwell AFB, Ala., provide materials that are current and reflect the highest standards of educational excellence. The congressional charter also tasked CAP to stimulate public interest in aerospace issues. These external programs are primarily conducted through our nation's education systems. These workshops highlight basic aerospace knowledge and focus on advances in aerospace technology. Textbooks, learning tools, and visual aids geared to stimulate interest in aerospace matters also are provided for teachers to use in their classrooms. Started in 1951, these workshops have reached hundreds of thousands of young people. CAP also plans and executes the National Congress on Aviation and Space Education. NCASE is the premier aerospace education conference held in the nation. The NCASE is designed to promote an understanding of aviation and space education to motivate and encourage teachers to incorporate aerospace education into their curriculum. It also encourages aerospace leaders to speak out on aerospace issues facing our nation today.

Civil Air Patrol

Overview

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a congressionally chartered, federally supported nonprofit corporation that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force (USAF). Founded on December 1, 1941, CAP was established to mobilize civilian aviation resources for national defense services and has since evolved into a leading public service organization in the United States. The organization is dedicated to serving America's communities through emergency services, aerospace education, and youth development programs.

Mission and Programs

CAP operates under a mission statement that emphasizes "Volunteers Serving America’s Communities, Saving Lives, and Shaping Futures." The organization encapsulates its objectives into three primary areas:

  • Emergency Services: CAP is recognized for its role in search and rescue operations, disaster relief, and assistance during national emergencies. Volunteers are trained to provide critical support to local, state, and federal agencies.

  • Aerospace Education: CAP promotes aerospace education and related STEM careers through hands-on learning experiences and curriculum designed to engage youth both inside and outside the CAP cadet program.

  • Cadet Programs: The CAP cadet program focuses on developing leadership skills and good citizenship among youth. Participants undergo training that includes aerospace studies, physical fitness, and personal development, preparing them for future roles as leaders in various fields.

Structure and Membership

CAP is organized along military lines, featuring a hierarchical structure that includes national headquarters, regions, wings, squadrons, and flights. This structure facilitates the effective management of operations and programs across the country, which encompasses all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia. As of the current date, Civil Air Patrol boasts a membership of over 38,000 adults and more than 28,000 cadets, engaging community members from diverse backgrounds in aviation-related volunteer work.

Core Values

The organization operates based on four core values:

  • Integrity
  • Volunteer Service
  • Excellence
  • Respect

These values underpin CAP's commitment to fostering a supportive environment for its members while ensuring that decisions reflect the abilities and interests of individuals.

Federal Support and Role

CAP's operations are partially funded by the federal government, and it is recognized as a vital component of the Total Force of the U.S. Air Force. The organization often assists with missions that are not combat-related, including damage assessment, aerial transport of medical materials, and support for homeland security initiatives. CAP's unique capabilities allow it to serve as an effective partner in addressing various public service and emergency needs.

Through its comprehensive approach to service and education, the Civil Air Patrol continues to play a significant role in American communities, providing a cost-effective force multiplier for Air Force-assigned missions and contributing to the development of future leaders in aviation and beyond.
