No one should have to risk their financial stability in order to recover their health. We rallied at the New York State Capitol to call on the Assembly to vote on A.84 & significantly expand NY's languishing, outdated paid medical leave program. We were also joined by our incredible A Better Balance Community Advocate Lee (slide 3), who shared her powerful personal story. Lee earned only a paltry $156 a week after taxes under NY's TDI program (with no guarantee of health insurance or a job to return to) when she needed to take paid medical leave from her job as a bartender in order to protect the health of her pregnancy. That's barely enough to cover groceries, let alone rent. We thank Assemblymembers Harry Bronson, Michaelle Solages, and Phil Steck, who joined us at the rally, for their leadership. Speaker Carl Heastie, let's get this done! (fb)

About the organization

Our Mission A Better Balance is the leading national nonprofit legal advocacy organization dedicated to workfamily justice. We use the power of the law to ensure all workers can care for themselves and their loved ones without sacrificing their economic security. Our expert legal team combats discrimination against pregnant workers and caregivers and advances supportive workfamily policies like paid sick time paid family and medical leave fair scheduling and accessible quality childcare and eldercare. When we value the work of providing care which has long been marginalized due to sexism and racism our communities and our nation are healthier and stronger.
