Toastmasters International
Overview
Toastmasters International is a U.S.-headquartered nonprofit educational organization dedicated to helping individuals improve their public speaking, communication, and leadership skills. The organization operates a global network of local clubs, fostering a supportive environment for members to develop these skills.
History
The concept of Toastmasters originated in the early 1900s when Ralph C. Smedley, then an educational director for the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Bloomington, Illinois, began leading informal speech clubs. However, the first official Toastmasters club was established on October 22, 1924, in Santa Ana, California. This marked the beginning of Toastmasters International, which quickly grew, incorporating as a nonprofit under California law on December 19, 1932. The first international chapter was opened in Vancouver, Canada, in 1932. The organization began admitting women in 1973, significantly expanding its membership and global presence.
Structure and Programs
Toastmasters clubs are structured around regular meetings, typically lasting two hours, where members engage in prepared speeches, impromptu speaking through "Table Topics," and receive feedback. Members progress through educational materials, such as the Pathways program, which offers eleven paths focused on public speaking, interpersonal communication, management, strategic leadership, and confidence. The Pathways program consists of 14 projects per path and includes both online and print materials.
Before the advent of Pathways, a basic manual for Toastmasters was the Competent Communication Manual, which guided members in presenting ten speeches aimed at developing foundational speaking skills. These skills include ice breaking, speech organization, and persuasive techniques. Upon completing the manual, members can continue their development with Advanced Communication Manuals.
Mission and Values
The mission of Toastmasters International is to empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders. The organization fosters a supportive learning environment that encourages personal growth and self-confidence. Toastmasters values integrity, respect, service, and excellence, promoting a culture of mutual respect and accountability among its members.
Membership and Reach
As of recent years, Toastmasters International has a significant global presence with over 13,000 clubs in 116 countries and a membership of approximately 270,000. The organization is open to individuals aged 18 and above who are eager to develop their communication and leadership skills.
