Society for Disabilities

The Society for Disabilities is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities in the Central Valley region of California. Founded in 1947, it was initially known as the Stanislaus County Society for Crippled Children and Adults, Inc.

Mission and Programs

The organization focuses on providing a variety of services aimed at improving the quality of life and self-sufficiency of individuals with disabilities. This includes:

  • Adaptive Recreation Programs: The Society offers a range of recreational activities such as adapted snow skiing, water skiing, bike camp, bowling, soccer, and special events like a Day on the Farm and a special needs ball.
  • Medical Equipment Loan Closet: Operating the largest medical loan closet in Northern California, they provide essential medical equipment like walkers, wheelchairs, bedside commodes, and hospital beds on a loan basis.
  • Educational Programs: These programs help in educating and empowering individuals with disabilities.
  • Workforce Development: The organization offers job training skills through its thrift store operations, assisting individuals with disabilities in gaining employment.
  • Resource and Referral Services: Provides guidance and support in navigating available resources for people with disabilities.

History

The organization was established during a time when there were limited resources for individuals with disabilities. Over the years, it has evolved and expanded its services, initially focusing on providing medical equipment and therapy due to the absence of federal health plans. Following the establishment of Medicare in 1965, the Society adapted its programs to fill gaps in Medicare coverage.

Funding and Support

The Society for Disabilities relies on donations, grants, and fundraising events for its financial support. It has received grants from various foundations to support its general operations and specific programs. The organization's success is also attributed to the generosity of local businesses and individuals, emphasizing community involvement and volunteerism as key factors in its mission.

Leadership and Governance

Cathy Mendoza serves as the Executive Director, overseeing the organization's operations. Other key personnel include Richard O'Brien as President, with additional leadership roles filled by individuals dedicated to the cause.

Impact and Legacy

For over seven decades, the Society for Disabilities has remained committed to its mission of enhancing the lives of people with disabilities in the Central Valley. Its comprehensive approach to providing support through adaptive recreation, education, workforce development, and medical equipment access has made it a vital community resource.
