Congratulations to ADA Forsyth postdoctoral researcher Nika Mehrnia, DDS, for taking 1st place in the AAAS 2025 Graduate Student Competition! Nika’s award-winning project explores a cutting-edge 3D-printed, SPM-releasing bone graft with exciting potential for alveolar bone regeneration. Special thanks to her mentor, Dr. Thomas Van Dyke, for his guidance, and to Dr. Hatice Hasturk for encouraging her to enter the competition. Severe periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, can result in bone loss surrounding teeth. Bone grafts have traditionally served as a treatment for this problem, and research at ADA Forsyth could improve the efficacy of bone grafts. The project, led in part by AFI’s VP of Clinical and Translational Research Dr. Thomas Van Dyke, involves creating customized bone grafts that regenerate bone more effectively than present treatments by including medicines that control inflammation.
