Exercise is important for people of all ages, however, strength training is crucial as we age, as it helps to preserve bone density, mobility and builds muscle while reducing muscle loss that occurs naturally as we age. In 2019, Jullie McCurdy, PhD, began visiting regularly to spend time with her uncle in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU). During these visits, she formed a bond with his care team, particularly with one nurse, Jeanette Kirley, RN. After her uncle’s passing and witnessing the challenges healthcare workers faced during the early pandemic days, Jullie decided to show her gratitude by delivering snacks and baked goods to the CVICU staff almost every week, rain or shine. As her weekly tradition grew, Jullie began bringing treats for Associates across all the intensive care units and night shifts. She was soon joined by her dog, Jinger, who became a comforting presence for staff, patients and visitors. Jullie’s kindhearted gesture has had a lasting impact, lifting the spirits of our staff during long and stressful shifts. “I have a profound respect and admiration for healthcare workers who take care of others during their most difficult hospital stays,” said Jullie. “They were there for my uncle, caring and comforting him in the ICU during a hard time for our family. I feel proud to support them in any way that I can. It was the least I could do to help pay it forward.” Her kindness hasn’t gone unnoticed. She became one of the first non-Associates to receive our Foundation’s Guardian Angel award, a tribute usually reserved for hospital staff who make a difference in the lives of our patients. “I feel that I can't overemphasize how much her kindness and generosity has meant to all of us,” said Jeanette. For Jullie and Jinger, their weekly deliveries remain a heartfelt tradition — one they look forward to continuing for years to come.
