𝑹𝒐𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 #wildlifewednesday 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒐𝒔 𝑹𝒐𝒄𝒌 𝑰𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒏𝒂 (𝘊𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘢)—𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒊𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒏𝒂 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒂𝒚 𝒆𝒈𝒈𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒔! Females choose an active termite mound and dig a tunnel into it, rounding out an incubation chamber at the end. They then lay 5 to 18 eggs just outside the tunnel, and push the eggs into it with their front legs. A female will aggressively guard her nest for up to 10 weeks, chasing off any other females that might want to steal the space. “𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙛𝙛 𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡, 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙢𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙨 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙚!” Why use a termite mound? With very little loose soil available on Andros Island, termite mounds are often one of the few choices for digging a nest. Plus, temperatures inside the mound are warmer and remain more consistent than the temperature outside. After all, why turn down a cozy, ready-made nursery? #worksmarternotharder #thanksroomies #cozynest #iguana #cyclura #androsisland #herpetology #reptiles #iguanafoundation (fb)

By providing grant funds to iguana research and conservation we work to restore these flagship species and their habitats and give critical support to sciencebased iguana recovery programs. As a nonprofit organization we generate public awareness of the important role that iguanas play in maintaining healthy ecosystems as well as the many threats facing wild iguanas today.
