As we gear up for another summer of creative youth storytelling, we're flashing back to a moving oral history project from last year's Public Art Youth Employment Program. In partnership with our longtime friends at Inwood Community Services, Inc, a team of Youth Apprentices (YAs) worked on an oral history documentary about Inwood, a small neighborhood at the northern tip of Manhattan. While interviewing neighborhood residents and locally-famous faces, they documented on subjects like gentrification, affordable housing, climate change, and recent rezoning plans. From bottle cap mosaics to barber shops, and other every-day beauties, they also highlighted the charm of the neighborhood that would otherwise be overlooked.
