FRIENDS OF FERDINAND
Friends of Ferdinand
Friends of Ferdinand, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting responsible retirement for Thoroughbred racehorses in Indiana and the Midwest. Established in 2005, the organization was named in honor of the celebrated racehorse Ferdinand, a Kentucky Derby winner who tragically met his end in a Japanese slaughterhouse.
Mission and Services
The mission of Friends of Ferdinand is to provide a second career for retired Thoroughbred racehorses by offering rehabilitation, retraining, and adoption services. The organization maintains a small program size, typically caring for about a dozen horses at a time, ensuring personalized attention and care.
Rehabilitation Process
Upon entering the program, horses undergo comprehensive veterinary evaluations at one of two partner veterinary clinics. This process includes a thorough health and wellness exam to identify any physical limitations, ensuring that horses are sound and healthy enough for new careers. After medical clearance, horses are given time off before beginning their retraining.
Retraining and Adoption
The organization focuses on matching each horse with the right adopter. Horses are retrained at facilities in Indiana and Ohio, often receiving over 60 days of professional training to ensure they are prepared for various equestrian activities, such as trail riding, dressage, and hunter/jumper events. Potential adopters must complete a thorough application process, which includes vet and personal references, a test ride with the horse, and a mandatory 30-day trial to ensure compatibility.
Programs and Initiatives
In addition to its core rehabilitation and retraining program, Friends of Ferdinand has expanded to include several specialized initiatives:
- Broodmare Bunch: Focuses on retraining retired broodmares for new careers.
- Pasture Pals: Matches non-riding horses with suitable long-term homes where they can serve as companions.
- #PoniesOfTheCaribbean: Collaborates with Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare to rescue and rehome horses from Puerto Rico.
Recognition and Support
Friends of Ferdinand is the only Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA)-accredited organization in Indiana, reflecting its commitment to maintaining high standards in equine care. The organization relies on grants, donations, and volunteer efforts for its operations and has received significant support from organizations like the Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA).
