The Hawaiʻi state legislature and the governor have strengthened protections for ʻIo and native plants and animals! There has been a recent increase in the number of killed or maimed ʻIo on Hawaiʻi Island. Particularly due to purposeful shooting. The first offence is now a misdemeanor and a $250 fine or 1 year prison sentence, and second offences are now a felony with a $1,000 fine or two year prison sentence. Administrative fees start at $2,500 for the first offence, and up to $20,000 for the third offense.
