Lick-Wilmerding High School
Lick-Wilmerding High School (LWHS) is a private, independent, coeducational college preparatory high school located in San Francisco, California. Established in 1874, the school has a rich history rooted in vocational education and a commitment to developing students into engaged and ethical citizens.
History
Originally founded as the California School of Mechanical Arts through a trust established by James Lick, the school aimed to provide a blend of general intellectual preparation with technical and vocational training. The school officially opened in January 1895 under the direction of George Merrill, who sought to create "educated craftsmen."
In the late 19th century, Jellis Wilmerding established the Wilmerding School of Industrial Arts, which focused on the building trades and architecture. The two schools operated in close proximity and shared resources until they merged in the 1950s, culminating in the formation of Lick-Wilmerding High School. Following this merger, Lick-Wilmerding moved to its current campus on Ocean Avenue in 1956 and became coeducational again in 1972.
Mission and Curriculum
LWHS is known for its unique "Head, Heart, Hands" curriculum, which emphasizes holistic education encompassing academic rigor, emotional intelligence, and hands-on skills. This curriculum aims to prepare students not only for college but also to contribute positively to society. The school encourages mindfulness and a balanced approach to personal and community well-being.
The educational approach at LWHS integrates the liberal arts, sciences, technical arts, visual arts, and performing arts, enabling students to become passionate, self-directed, lifelong learners. The school actively promotes social justice and civic engagement through various programs and initiatives.

Approximately 69% of students identify as people of color, reflecting the school's commitment to cultural and socioeconomic diversity.
LWHS also offers a Flexible Tuition program, providing over $7 million in financial aid to support access to education for families from various backgrounds.
