Mission and Services
The mission of the Yuba Sutter Veterans Stand Down is to assist veterans in accessing necessary services to improve their well-being. This includes providing support for homeless veterans to re-enter the job market and acquire permanent housing[4]. The organization's services are modeled after the Stand Down concept from the Vietnam War, where troops could rest and receive essential care in a safe environment. This concept is adapted to help homeless veterans receive medical, dental, and social support.
During the Stand Down events, which typically last three days, hundreds of veterans are offered a wide range of necessities, including meals, clothing, and medical care. Additionally, services from the Veterans Administration (VA), employment counseling, recovery programs, and more are available[2]. The events are designed to help veterans address immediate physical needs and reconnect with their community.
Organizational Structure
The Yuba Sutter Veterans Stand Down is led by a board of directors that includes veterans from different branches of the military. As of recent data, the board members include Michael Nichols, Don Buck Blair (US Army), Robert Upton (USMC), Marvin King (US Air Force), Bob Logan (US Air Force), Kelly Carter (Civilian), Don Parsons (US Army), and David Baker (US Army)[3]. The organization receives grants and contributions to support its initiatives. Recent grants have included support from the Yuba River Endowment and the Enterprise Holdings Foundation[5]. The total revenues reported in recent financial years have been primarily from grants and contributions.
Community Impact
The Yuba Sutter Veterans Stand Down is recognized for its role in transforming the lives of veterans. By providing a supportive environment where veterans can access essential services and reconnect with their community, the organization plays a crucial role in helping veterans overcome homelessness and other challenges. The annual Stand Down events have become a cornerstone of this effort, demonstrating the organization's commitment to supporting those who have served in the military.
