Description

Alpha Gamma Delta

Alpha Gamma Delta (ΑΓΔ), commonly referred to as Alpha Gam, is an international women's fraternity and social organization. It was founded on May 30, 1904, by eleven female students at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, making it the youngest member of the Syracuse Triad alongside Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Phi.

Founding

The organization was founded at the home of Dr. Wellesley Perry Coddington, who played a significant role in its early development. Initially, the founders chose the fraternity's colors, motto, and badge. Alpha Gamma Delta was established as a U.S.-wide women's fraternity, distinguishing itself from local fraternities or literary societies. The first president was Jennie Titus Smith Morris.

Purpose and Activities

Alpha Gamma Delta aims to provide its members with opportunities for social interaction, academic support, leadership development, and community service. The fraternity is known for its philanthropic efforts, with a current focus on fighting hunger through partnerships with organizations like Feeding America and Meals on Wheels.

History

In 1919, Alpha Gamma Delta became the first women's fraternity to launch an international philanthropy project by establishing summer camps for underprivileged children. Over the years, the fraternity's philanthropic focus has evolved, including support for children with disabilities, diabetes research, and now, combating hunger. The Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, established in 1962 (as the Founders Memorial Foundation and renamed in 1990), oversees these philanthropic efforts.

Expansion and Impact

As of today, Alpha Gamma Delta has more than 119 active collegiate chapters and over 250 alumnae groups. The fraternity has initiated over 201,000 members across North America. Its international scope extends beyond the U.S., with chapters in Canada. Alpha Gamma Delta is a member of the National Panhellenic Conference.
