East Parker County Library

The East Parker County Library operated from July 14, 1994, to September 30, 2024, as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It served as a community library primarily in Parker County and Aledo Independent School District, Texas.

History

Established in 1989 by a group of local residents, the library initially operated with volunteer support. In 1994, it became a formal member of the North Texas Regional Library System and was officially recognized by the State of Texas. Over the years, the library moved through several locations in Aledo, including its final setup at the old Aledo Post Office building in December 2000.

Resources and Services

The East Parker County Library offered a diverse collection of materials, including over 26,000 titles of books, videos, audio materials, and additional eBooks. It provided access to the Internet via public computers and WiFi services. The library also collaborated with other libraries through a bi-weekly courier service, allowing patrons to borrow materials from libraries like Azle Memorial Library, Springtown Public Library, and Weatherford Public Library via membership in the Parker County Library Association. This network gave patrons access to approximately 175,000 items across participating libraries.

Mission and Impact

The library's mission was to promote a love of reading, support lifelong learning, and enhance cultural enrichment opportunities for local residents. Through various programs and community engagement initiatives, it encouraged educational, informational, and recreational activities across the region.

Organizational Structure

The library operated with financial support from Parker County, the City of Aledo, and local towns. It relied on donations, fundraising events, and community contributions to maintain its services.

Transition

In late 2024, the East Parker County Library transitioned from its non-profit status, integrating into the City of Aledo's operations. This change marked a significant shift in its organizational structure while maintaining its commitment to serving the local community.

Friends of the Library

The library benefited from the support of the "Friends" organization, which helped facilitate fundraising efforts and library events. This group played a crucial role in promoting the library's activities and securing community support.

Operational Budget

The library's operational budget fell within the range of $100,000 to $249,999 annually.
