National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution
National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution
Overview
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (often abbreviated as DAR or NSDAR) is a non-profit, lineage-based membership service organization for women who are direct descendants of patriots of the American Revolutionary War. Founded on October 11, 1890, its primary focus includes historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The organization was chartered by the United States Congress on December 2, 1896.
History
The DAR was founded by Mary Smith Lockwood, Mary Desha, Ellen Hardin Walworth, and Eugenia Washington. Caroline Lavina Scott Harrison, the first lady of President Benjamin Harrison, played a significant role in the establishment of the society by serving as its first President General. Her interest in historic preservation aligned with the organization's goals, which were to promote historical awareness and patriotism across the United States.
Structure and Membership
Membership is limited to women aged 18 and older who can prove direct descent from a patriot of the Revolutionary period. The organization is structured into three levels: the National Society, State Societies, and local Chapters. Chapters can be established by a minimum of 12 members, and each level is overseen by an executive board composed of various officers. The DAR has over 190,000 members across the United States and several other countries.
Activities and Initiatives
The organization conducts a multifaceted program through divisions focused on:
- Historical Preservation: Preserving historical sites, artifacts, and documents related to American history.
- Education: Offering scholarships, supporting educational programs for underprivileged youth, and sponsoring essay contests and youth programs.
- Patriotism: Encouraging patriotic activities, supporting veterans, and promoting American values.
The DAR also publishes American Spirit Magazine, which contributes to its educational and patriotic efforts. Additionally, the organization provides resources for genealogical research and maintains a library and archives for historical study.
Impact and Legacy
Throughout its history, the DAR has been involved in various philanthropic activities, including significant contributions during World War I and World War II. Locally, chapters undertake projects to preserve historical landmarks and educate communities about American history. The North Carolina chapter, for example, has placed numerous historical markers and monuments across the state and has supported national efforts such as the upkeep of Memorial Continental Hall, the DAR's national headquarters. Today, the DAR remains a prominent organization dedicated to its mission of fostering patriotism and historical awareness.
