Stellar Vista Observatory
Stellar Vista Observatory is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Kanab, Utah. It was founded in 2018 by local residents with the goal of establishing a public, educational astronomical observatory to serve both visitors and residents of Kanab and surrounding communities. The organization officially obtained its 501(c)(3) status in 2019[1][5].
Mission and Objectives
The mission of Stellar Vista Observatory is to provide observational experiences to help people appreciate and understand the celestial beauty of southern Utah's starry night skies. It aims to encourage community and visitor participation in educational events and activities. The observatory is designed to enhance science education, offering hands-on training and tools for educators in Kane County. It also seeks to become a top dark sky destination, thereby boosting tourism in the area[2][5].
Location and Features
Kanab's unique location offers clear weather, high altitude, and minimal light pollution, making it an ideal site for astronomical viewing. The observatory's design includes a roll-off roof and an outdoor viewing plaza, which can accommodate up to 76 participants for evening programs. These programs include constellation tours and deep-space object observations using powerful telescopes. Additionally, the observatory features a 40-seat classroom for educational lectures[1].
Funding and Development
In May 2024, Stellar Vista Observatory was awarded a $200,000 Tier 1 Outdoor Recreation Grant from the Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation. This grant is part of Phase 1 site improvements for its future observatory. Combined with other funding sources, including donations and a $25,000 award from the County Recreation and Transportation Special Service District, the organization is making progress toward its overall fundraising goal of $1.2 million[1].
Community Impact
The observatory is expected to enhance community pride by offering exciting nighttime activities and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty of the region's dark skies. It also aims to inspire both locals and tourists to engage with astronomy and science[2].
