Research Focus

The New York Genome Center focuses on several key areas of genomic research, including:

  • Genomic Analysis: Utilizing advanced genomic tools to understand the genetic basis of diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and neuropsychiatric disorders.
  • Technology Innovation: Developing cutting-edge sequencing technologies and methods to enhance genomic discovery.
  • Single Cell Genomics: Investigating the genetic diversity of single cells to better understand disease mechanisms.
  • Population and Evolutionary Genomics: Studying genomic variations across populations and evolutionary time scales.

Collaborations and Partnerships

The organization is built on collaborations with top medical and academic institutions, including its founding members which include institutions like Columbia University, Weill Cornell Medicine, and Rockefeller University. Over time, it has expanded to include more than 20 member institutions. It also partners with disease foundations, pharmaceutical companies, and industry leaders to accelerate research and discovery.

Facility and Operations

The New York Genome Center operates a 170,000 square-foot state-of-the-art research facility. This includes a sequencing lab, a Technology Innovation Lab, and a CLIA/CLEP clinical lab focused on next-generation sequencing for genetics and oncology. The facility also houses JLABS@NYC, a life sciences incubator developed in partnership with Johnson & Johnson Innovation, supporting start-ups in the life sciences sector.

Funding and Support

The organization has secured significant funding, exceeding $500 million, through federal and private grants, philanthropy, and support from member institutions and New York State. Major donors include the Simons Foundation and the Carson Family Charitable Trust, contributing substantial gifts in recent years.

Leadership and Governance

The New York Genome Center is led by prominent scientists, with Tom Maniatis serving as the Evnin Family Scientific Director and CEO. The organization is governed by a board composed of distinguished leaders from its member institutions.

Impact and Achievements

The New York Genome Center has contributed significantly to the understanding of genetic diseases and has engaged in several large-scale genomic projects. Its work includes identifying genetic markers for common diseases and participating in major national research initiatives. The center has been actively involved in COVID-19 genomics research, reflecting its adaptability to emerging health challenges.
