Our mission is simple: To eagerly welcome the transforming power of God in our own lives and in the world. We are modern women who respond to the world's hunger for peace, simplicity and hospitality by praying and living together in community. Our life and ministries are examples to the world of how it is possible to satisfy this hunger. Through an active individual and communal prayer life, we are called into ministries that meet the needs of this culture and time. Examples of these works include health care, education, pastoral and parish work, counseling and more.

The Monastery of St. Gertrude was founded by three Benedictine nuns from St. Andrew's Abbey in Sarnen, Switzerland. They immigrated to the United States in 1882 and initially settled in Gervais, Oregon. Over time, they established schools and missions in Uniontown and Colton, Washington, and eventually relocated to Cottonwood, Idaho, in 1907. The present monastery building was completed in 1924 and features a historic chapel listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
