American Volkssport Association
The American Volkssport Association (AVA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting noncompetitive sports activities across the United States. Founded in 1976, it is part of the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV), a global organization that originated in Germany. The term "Volkssport" translates to "the sport of the people," emphasizing its inclusivity and accessibility for participants of all ages and abilities.
History
The concept of Volkssporting began in southern Germany in response to a need for inclusive outdoor activities. It evolved from competitive races to a noncompetitive format in 1968, allowing participants to enjoy physical fitness without the pressures of competition. The first US Volkssport event took place in Fredericksburg, Texas, in 1976, marking the beginning of the AVA. This event was initiated by Rev. Kenn Knopp, who was inspired by his experiences with volkssporting in Germany.
Activities
The AVA organizes a variety of noncompetitive events, including walking, hiking, bicycling, swimming, and in some regions, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Walking is the most popular activity among these. Events typically offer choices between 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) and 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) routes. Participants can start at their own pace within a designated time window, contributing to a stress-free environment that emphasizes personal fitness over competition.
Structuring and Governance
The AVA oversees a network of over 250 chartered clubs nationwide, each responsible for organizing local events. The organization is governed by a National Executive Council, consisting of elected volunteer directors and a paid staff. This council ensures that volkssporting activities align with the association's mission of promoting lifelong fun, fitness, and friendship for all ages and abilities.
Mission and Impact
The AVA's mission is to promote family-oriented sporting events that foster physical fitness and social interaction. By organizing over 2,500 events annually, the AVA provides opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to engage in outdoor activities. The organization's vision is to increasingly engage Americans in noncompetitive physical fitness activities, contributing to improved health and well-being.
Achievements and Incentives
Participants can enroll in an Achievement Awards Program, which recognizes individuals for completing events and accumulating mileage. This program encourages continued participation and achievement, with participants receiving patches, pins, and certificates for their accomplishments.
Participation and Membership
Participation in AVA events is open to the general public, and while membership is optional, it offers additional benefits and incentives. Local clubs often collaborate with youth groups and community organizations to promote volkssporting and encourage broader participation. Despite its growth, the AVA remains committed to its core values of non-competitiveness, inclusivity, and community engagement.
