Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas
The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas, commonly referred to as the Grand Lodge of Texas, is a prominent fraternal organization in the state of Texas. It is one of the largest and most influential Masonic bodies in the world, adhering to the ancient traditions of Freemasonry.
History
Freemasonry in Texas began taking form with the efforts of Stephen F. Austin, a prominent early settler and Mason, who attempted to establish a lodge in 1828. However, these early attempts were thwarted by the Mexican government's ban on Freemasonry due to its perceived links to liberal and independence movements[1][2][3].
The first successful Masonic meeting in Texas occurred in March 1835, when Anson Jones and four other Master Masons met under an oak tree near Brazoria. They petitioned the Grand Lodge of Louisiana for a dispensation to form a lodge, leading to the establishment of Holland Lodge No. 36, with Anson Jones as its first Worshipful Master[1][2][3].
In 1838, the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas was founded, with Anson Jones serving as its first Grand Master. This institution evolved into the Grand Lodge of Texas after Texas became a state[2][3].
Activities and Influence
The Grand Lodge of Texas supports various charitable initiatives, including educational programs and children's hospitals through its affiliated organizations. Masonic lodges across Texas engage in community service, enhancing their local environments and fostering community cohesion[4].
Membership and Structure
As of recent years, the Grand Lodge of Texas reported a large membership, making it one of the most substantial Masonic organizations globally. It oversees numerous local lodges throughout Texas, providing a framework for Masonic activities and governance within the state[2][3].
Grand Lodge Temple
The Grand Lodge of Texas is headquartered in Waco, Texas, where it maintains a significant temple constructed in the style of King Solomon's Temple. This facility includes a library and a museum open to the public, featuring Texas memorabilia[3][4].
Notable Contributions
The organization has played a significant role in shaping Texas's history, with many prominent leaders, including presidents of the Republic of Texas and governors of the state, being members of the fraternity[3]. Freemasonry in Texas continues to be a vibrant part of the state's social fabric, contributing to community development and civic life.
