"It turns out that when societies get very affluent, they tend to have fewer children. So the peak in affluence in a lot of ways in Rome, in terms of general affluence, was around 50 BC, and what you see happening is a declining birthrate in Rome in about that period. So much so, that Augustus Caesar actually passed a law that tried to force Roman noblemen, particularly, to get married and have children because he was already seeing at that point this decline in the Roman birthrate. And you also see accompanying this, within just a few generations, a decline in Roman values, in the norms and expectations that you see in Rome. You see a remarkable rise in decadence within just a few generations. Most notably, in the Caesars, but you also see it more broadly in society.
