Neighbor for Neighbor
Neighbor for Neighbor is a non-profit interfaith organization dedicated to serving impoverished communities, particularly focusing on the uninsured, low-income individuals, the unemployed, seniors, and the handicapped. The organization emphasizes demonstrating faith through action, seeking justice for the poor, and encouraging all people to realize their potential[1][4].
History
Founded in 1968 by Dan Allen and a group of concerned citizens, Neighbor for Neighbor has a long history of advocating for social justice and addressing poverty. Initially, it worked through a collaborative effort involving multiple churches and congregations in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to provide essential services to those in need[4]. Over the years, the organization has grown and expanded its services, including establishing a large facility to house its programs[4].
Programs and Mission
Neighbor for Neighbor offers a variety of programs designed to support vulnerable populations. These include assistance for basic needs such as food and healthcare services. The organization is committed to providing opportunities for individuals to become self-sufficient, aligning with its mission to give people a "hand up" rather than a "handout"[1][4]. Neighbor for Neighbor is entirely privately funded and works independently of government and United Way agencies[1][4].
Impact
Through its efforts, Neighbor for Neighbor has made significant contributions to the Tulsa community and beyond. It has been instrumental in establishing other important initiatives, such as legal aid services and community food banks[4]. The organization continues to adapt its services to meet the evolving needs of its clients.
Private Funding and Community Engagement
Neighbor for Neighbor relies on private funding and in-kind donations from dedicated volunteers. The community's support has been crucial in allowing the organization to provide millions of dollars in services annually[4]. This approach ensures that all resources are directed towards helping those in need, rather than administrative costs.
Legacy of Dan Allen
The organization's founder, Dan Allen, played a pivotal role in shaping its mission and vision. His dedication to advocating for the poor led him to resign from the priesthood in 1973 to focus entirely on Neighbor for Neighbor's work. Until his passing in 1995, Allen remained a central figure in the organization, fostering a legacy of community service and social responsibility[4].
