Richard P. Hall Eagles Foundation, Inc.
The Richard P. Hall Eagles Foundation, Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing opportunities for youth, particularly in underrepresented communities, in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The foundation is inspired by the legacy of Richard P. Hall, a renowned aviator and educator.
Background
Richard P. Hall was born in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, and grew up in a family of modest means. He rose to prominence as a distinguished aviator, graduating from the United States Air Force Academy in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. Hall was motivated by the heroic legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and became one of the few African Americans to graduate from pilot training at Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi. Throughout his career, Hall accumulated over 16,000 flight hours as both a military and commercial pilot, working for the U.S. Air Force and later as a First Officer for United Airlines.
Mission
The foundation continues Hall's commitment to inspiring young people, especially from historically underrepresented communities, to pursue careers in STEM fields. It aims to ignite an early interest in math and science through various initiatives, including partnerships with educational institutions and community programs.
Programs and Initiatives
- STEM Scholarships: The foundation offers scholarships to deserving students pursuing STEM careers. The Richard P. Hall Eagles Foundation Bastrop High School STEM Scholarship is one such initiative, now in its fourth year.
- Aviation Expos: Annual sponsorship of events like the City of Miramar's Aviation Expo, exposing students to career opportunities in aviation.
- STEM Education Support: The foundation supports K-8 STEM programs, such as Girls Who Code, Robotics, and LEGO Clubs at schools like Frank C. Martin K-8 Center.
- Community Partnerships: Collaborations with organizations like Hispanic Unity 4Teens After-school Program to foster new STEM enthusiasts at Attucks Middle School.
Leadership
LaTéssa Dotson Hall serves as the Executive Director and founder of the foundation. She continues her late husband's legacy by engaging with communities and promoting STEM education among young people.
Recognition
The foundation's efforts are part of a broader movement to increase diversity and access in STEM education, reflecting Richard P. Hall's own journey as a pioneering figure in aviation.
