Survivors of Violent Loss Program
Enhancing the health of survivors of violent loss and all generations. Vision: That every survivor may have access to finest evidence-based care.Violent dying accounts for nearly 10% of annual deaths in the U.S., and may be associated with a prolonged and dysfunctional bereavement syndrome in family members and friends. The Survivors of Violent Loss Program works to address this problem and improve the health of those who live or work with traumatic grief in the aftermath of violent death ( homicide, suicide, drunk driving, terrorist fatalities or war). Violent dying places family members at risk for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, substance abuse and other health problems. SVLP’s clinical services are provided with evidence-based methods that have been studied for over twenty years. SVLP's Program founder is a nationally recognized specialist and contributor in the study of violent death bereavement. Direct service professionals at SVLP have been trained in working with the kind of grief that does not go away in time for over two years or more. Like the founder, several clinical team members have had a violent loss. SVLP's ten years collection of pre and post screening data demonstrate that reduced symptoms occur for many participants when working with this San Diego based program. In addition to direct counseling services, the programs internet based services reaches interested people internationally through their website, FACEBOOK and Blog. A consistent and active Peer Participant program allows for access to other survivors as well. Training and education has been an important aspect of this agency. SVLP works to form collective partnerships in search of the best care and support we can provide for those who live and work with violent death. An adult self-help workbook provides adjunctive care for family members as well.
