The Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy is a community dedicated to providing passionate skiers the opportunity to pursue athletic dreams, academic excellence, and personal growth while celebrating grit, grace, and courage.

Sugar Bowl Academy
Overview

Sugar Bowl Academy (SBA) is a nonprofit private school founded in 1999, located on Donner Summit, California. It is the only ski academy in the western United States and is dedicated to combining competitive winter sports with college preparatory academics for student-athletes. The academy is accredited by the California Association of Independent Schools and is a gold-certified club of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association.

Mission and Vision

SBA's mission is to provide a supportive community for aspiring skiers, enabling them to pursue their athletic dreams alongside academic excellence and personal growth. The organization emphasizes values of grit, grace, and courage among its student-athletes. Its vision is to establish itself as the recognized gold standard for ski teams and academies.

History

Sugar Bowl Academy originated as a program of the Sugar Bowl Ski Team Foundation (SBSTF), which was founded in 1992 by Sheldon Ramsey. Dr. Patricia Hellman Gibbs, a former U.S. Ski Team member, played a crucial role in establishing the academy in 1999. She aimed to create an environment similar to Vermont's Stratton Mountain School, providing young athletes the ability to pursue skiing without compromising academic development. Over three decades, SBA has evolved to nurture student-athletes who excel in both sports and academics.

Programs

SBA offers training in various winter sports, including Alpine skiing, cross country, freeride, and freeskiing, starting from age five. Students can participate in programs designed for different levels of commitment, including part-time and full-time options, which integrate athletics with a rigorous academic curriculum. The academy prides itself on having world-class coaches, many of whom are former national team members and experienced athletes.

Community and Facilities

Situated in Sugar Bowl Village, the academy boasts a ski-in/ski-out facility, providing seamless access to training grounds and academic resources. This unique location allows student-athletes to maximize their training time while minimizing commuting, thus fostering an immersive learning environment. SBA's commitment to community and personal development is reflected in its comprehensive approach to student training and education.

Financial Overview

As a 501(c)(3) organization, contributions to Sugar Bowl Academy are tax-deductible. According to its latest tax filings, the academy generated significant revenue from program services and contributions, which are crucial for supporting its mission and operational needs. The academy relies heavily on the generosity of the community, alumni, and supporters to maintain its programs and facilities.

Alumni and Impact

SBA has produced numerous successful alumni who have competed at top levels, including Olympic teams, collegiate athletics, and professional sports. The academy's focus on balancing athletics and academics prepares its graduates not only for sports but also for future success in various professional fields.

In summary, Sugar Bowl Academy functions as a pivotal institution for young athletes in the skiing community, blending elite sports training with academic rigor in a supportive and enriching environment.
