The Delores Project
Overview
The Delores Project is a U.S. nonprofit organization focused on providing shelter and support services to unaccompanied women and transgender individuals experiencing homelessness. Established in honor of Delores Big Boy, a Lakota woman who cared for others amidst her own struggles with homelessness, the organization aims to create a space that embodies dignity and hospitality.
History
The Delores Project was founded in 2000, inspired by the life and values of Delores Big Boy. Since its inception, the organization has grown to become a significant provider of shelter and support services in Denver.
Mission and Vision
The Delores Project's mission is to build belonging for people experiencing homelessness through safe, dignified, and trauma-informed shelter for women, transgender, and nonbinary individuals, along with supportive services and housing. The organization's vision is that all individuals have the community of support and housing stability they need to thrive.
Programs and Services
-
Extended Stay Shelter: The organization operates a low-barrier, extended-stay shelter offering essential amenities like meals, hot showers, bus tickets, health services, and housing-focused case management. Guests participate in shelter chores and advisory committees to foster a positive environment.
-
Community Transitions: Provides safe shelter and emergency services for individuals released from correctional facilities.
-
Permanent Supportive Housing: Offers supportive housing through facilities like the Delores Apartments, providing 24-hour support services, case management, medical care linkages, and on-site behavioral health counseling for those who have been chronically homeless and live with disabilities.
Goals and Strategies
The Delores Project aims to diversify revenue sources, increase fundraising capacity, and establish strong asset management systems. It focuses on clear internal and external communications, a well-structured staffing model, facility improvements, and effective risk management. Additionally, the organization seeks to enhance its programs by operating under a trauma-informed care model and addressing broader needs of its client population.
Advocacy and Funding
The Delores Project is involved in advocacy for policies affecting homeless communities, particularly women and children. It collaborates with networks like the National Women's Shelter Network to secure funding and support for its mission. Despite challenges in securing stable funding, the organization remains committed to providing essential services, relying on individual donations and community support to continue its work.
Values
The Delores Project values respect, hospitality, dignity, self-determination, financial responsibility, inclusiveness, and communal care. It believes the community is strengthened by supporting those with the fewest resources.

🏳️🌈 This Pride Month, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and beauty of the LGBTQ+ community. But we also acknowledge a hard truth: federal attacks on LGBTQ+ rights—from rollbacks in anti-discrimination protections to efforts to erase gender-affirming care—are putting lives at risk. At The Delores Project, we see the impact every day. LGBTQ+ individuals, especially trans women, are disproportionately pushed into homelessness, denied safety, and turned away from services meant to help. When policies fail, our community steps in—but the need is growing. We remain committed to providing low-barrier, trauma-informed shelter where every person is affirmed and respected—no matter who they are or who they love. Because belonging isn’t optional. It’s life-saving. 🌈 Stand with us. Fight with us. And help us create a future where everyone has a safe place to call home. #PrideMonth #TransRightsAreHumanRights #LGBTQSupport #TheDeloresProject #BelongingIsEssential (fb)

🧠💚 May is Mental Health Awareness Month. At The Delores Project, we recognize the deep connection between mental health and homelessness. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, about 1 in 5 people experiencing homelessness live with a serious mental illness—yet many struggle to access the care they need. Experiencing homelessness often means more than losing housing—it can also mean losing safety, support, and stability. And that instability can severely impact mental health. That’s why we provide low-barrier, trauma-informed shelter and support services—meeting people where they are, with dignity and compassion. This month, take action: ✅ Share this post to help raise awareness ✅ Donate to support our work: https://givebutter.com/thedeloresproject ✅ Speak up for better mental health and housing policies in your community Together, we can fight stigma, support healing, and work toward a world where everyone has a safe place to call home. 💚 📊 Source: National Alliance on Mental Illness (nami.org) (fb)
