National Exchange Club

The National Exchange Club is a service organization founded in 1911 in Detroit, Michigan, by businessmen aiming to "exchange" ideas on community improvement. The organization's name was suggested by Charles A. Berkey, emphasizing the exchange of ideas among its members to better serve their communities.

History

The Exchange Club of Detroit was the first local club, followed by the Exchange Club of Toledo, Ohio, in 1913. Two other initial clubs were formed in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Cleveland, Ohio. The National Exchange Club was officially organized as a nonprofit, educational organization in 1917. It moved its headquarters to Toledo, Ohio, in the same year.

Programs and Services

The National Exchange Club operates through its Programs of Service, which focus on three main areas:

  • Americanism: Promoting patriotism and national pride.
  • Youth Programs: Providing scholarships, awards, and mentoring activities to support youth development. The organization offers awards such as the Accepting the Challenge of Excellence (ACE) Award and Youth of the Year award.
  • Community Service: Engaging in various community-based projects, including support for veterans through partnerships like Veterans Matter.
National Project: Prevention of Child Abuse

In 1979, the National Exchange Club officially adopted the prevention of child abuse as its national project. It provides awareness materials and engages in activities to heighten awareness about child abuse prevention.

Organizational Structure

The National Exchange Club is structured into districts and regions across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, with a national president overseeing all activities. Local clubs are managed by a board of directors.

Awards and Recognition

The Exchange Club gives prestigious awards, including the Book of Golden Deeds Award, which honors individuals for their community service efforts.

Impact and Membership

With over 700 clubs and more than 21,000 members, the National Exchange Club is dedicated to making a lasting impact on American communities through its various programs and services.
