Brothers of Harmony Lodge No. 42, PHA F&AM
Historical Overview
Brothers of Harmony Lodge No. 42, operating under the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of West Virginia, was established in 1978 in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The lodge emerged from a group of gospel singers known as "The Brothers of Harmony," primarily composed of local residents. This foundation reflects the lodge's commitment to community and fellowship.
Founding Members
The lodge was founded by a group of notable individuals, including Brother Charles R. Branson, who served as the President of the original gospel group. Other key figures included Brother Eugene Roman, the Secretary, and Brother Clarence Branson, the Treasurer. Brother Newton W. Washington, an influential musician and organist at Saint John's Baptist Church, was also instrumental in the lodge's early activities and governance.
Development and Growth
From its inception until 1982, the lodge held meetings at various local venues including the Youth Center and Men's Club in Shepherdstown. Under the leadership of Worshipful Master Branson Phillip Adams, the lodge transitioned to its own permanent location—a building previously owned by the "Fourteen Hundred Club." The establishment and renovation of the building into a two-story lodge was a significant milestone, showcasing the members' dedication and collaborative effort.
In recognition of their efforts, the New York Grand Lodge awarded Brother Adams a plaque for his leadership, underscoring the importance of strong leadership in the lodge's success.
Transition to the Prince Hall Grand Lodge
Initially affiliated with the New York Hiram Grand Lodge, Brothers of Harmony Lodge No. 42 faced challenges due to constitutional changes within that organization. After careful consideration and discussions, the lodge members voted to transition to the West Virginia Prince Hall Grand Lodge. This decision was made to ensure better opportunities for advancement within the Masonic community, marking a new era for the lodge.
Community Involvement and Legacy
Brothers of Harmony Lodge No. 42 has maintained a legacy of service and community engagement. Members regularly participate in charitable events and functions, contributing to both local and broader communities. The lodge’s activities are characterized by a spirit of brotherhood and a commitment to uplifting its members and the surrounding community.
The lodge continues to honor its roots while adapting to contemporary needs, ensuring its relevance and impact in the realm of Freemasonry. As of the present, the lodge remains a vibrant part of the Prince Hall Masonic family, fostering fellowship, leadership, and community service among its members.
