Toastmasters International, Inc.
Overview
Toastmasters International, Inc. is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving public speaking, communication, and leadership skills through its global network of local clubs. Founded by Ralph C. Smedley in 1924, it has grown to become one of the world's premier public speaking organizations.
History
The history of Toastmasters International began with Ralph C. Smedley, who initially started informal speaking clubs in 1905 during his tenure as an education director at the YMCA in Bloomington, Illinois. However, it was on October 22, 1924, that the first official Toastmasters club, then known as Smedley Club Number 1, was established in Santa Ana, California. This club laid the groundwork for what would become Toastmasters International.
In the late 1920s, Smedley developed the "Manual of Instruction," which helped standardize the organization's practices across different locations. By the early 1930s, the name "Toastmasters International" was adopted, and the organization was officially incorporated in 1932. The first foreign club was chartered in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, in 1935, marking the beginning of international expansion.
Development and Expansion
During the 1940s, Toastmasters continued to expand, and by 1949, there were over 700 clubs globally. Ralph Smedley played a pivotal role until his death in 1965. In 1973, Toastmasters opened its membership to women, which significantly increased its diversity and membership base. By the 1980s, membership had grown to over 100,000.
Over the years, Toastmasters has evolved to include a variety of educational programs, including the Competent Communication and Competent Leadership manuals, which are integral to its curriculum. The organization is known for its structured meeting format, which includes prepared speeches, impromptu speeches (known as Table Topics), evaluations, and roles assigned to members to help them develop leadership skills.
Programs and Structure
Toastmasters operates through a network of clubs, with each club meeting regularly, usually weekly or bi-weekly, and comprising 20 to 30 members. These meetings are structured to provide a supportive environment for practicing public speaking and leadership skills. Members progress through a variety of manuals, each designed to enhance specific communication and leadership abilities.
The organization is divided into regions and districts worldwide, facilitating coordination and support for local clubs. Toastmasters also offers various awards and recognition systems to motivate members as they progress through their educational journey.
Impact and Global Reach
Today, Toastmasters International has over 14,000 clubs in more than 150 countries, with a membership of approximately 270,000 people. Its global reach and diverse membership base reflect its commitment to empowering individuals from all backgrounds to become confident communicators and effective leaders.
