• World's leader in wetlands conservation • Over 19 million acres conserved • The Official Account of Ducks Unlimited Inc. The world’s leader in wetlands and associated habitat conservation. 🦆 DU conserves, restores, and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl, other wildlife, and people. Wetlands help meet the lifecycle needs of 900+ wildlife species, including many threatened or endangered ones. Our projects support clean water, climate change mitigation, public recreation, and countless other outcomes. People depend on the same ecosystems as waterfowl. Thus, DU provides wetland-based solutions for people through a three-pronged strategy of on-the-ground delivery guided by science and supported by advocacy of wetland-friendly public policies.

Description

Ducks Unlimited, Inc.-Elko Chapter

Overview

Ducks Unlimited, Inc.-Elko Chapter is part of Ducks Unlimited, Inc., a U.S. nonprofit organization aimed at conserving, restoring, and managing wetlands and associated habitats to benefit North America's waterfowl, other wildlife, and communities.

Mission

Ducks Unlimited (DU) focuses on a continental landscape approach to wetland conservation. Its mission is to conserve, restore, and manage these critical ecosystems. The organization was established in 1937 during the Dust Bowl, when hunters noticed wetlands disappearing at alarming rates. Since then, DU has conserved over 19 million acres of habitat across North America.

Conservation Efforts

DU works in all 50 U.S. states, focusing on areas crucial for waterfowl breeding, migration, and wintering. Their conservation methods fall into three main categories:

  • Protecting healthy intact wetlands through easements or purchases.
  • Enhancing degraded wetlands.
  • Restoring areas where wetlands once existed but were drained or altered.

DU uses sound science and collaboration with government agencies, private landowners, and other organizations to implement these strategies.

Chapters and Involvement

Ducks Unlimited chapters, including the Elko Chapter, are integral to DU's fundraising and community outreach efforts. Chapters often host events to raise funds and promote conservation among local communities. Volunteers play a significant role in organizing these events and advocating for wetland conservation policies.

Impact

The conservation efforts by DU and its chapters not only benefit waterfowl but also contribute to broader ecosystem health. Wetlands protected and restored by DU provide vital services such as flood control, water quality improvement, and carbon sequestration, benefiting both wildlife and human communities.

Ducks Unlimited's work is supported by over 644,000 members and 39,000 volunteers nationally. In fiscal year 2024, DU achieved a milestone by conserving over 1 million acres across North America, reflecting increased public and private interest in wetland restoration.
