Williamston Theatre

The Williamston Theatre, formally known as the Williamston Theatre Project, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the Arts, Culture, and Humanities category, specifically focused on theater[1]. Its mission involves engaging audiences with diverse storytelling, fostering inclusivity, developing theater professionals, and showcasing high-quality productions[4].

History

The Williamston Theatre was founded in the spring of 2004 by four Michigan-based theater professionals: actor John Lepard, director Tony Caselli, arts administrator Christine Purchis, and actress and producer Emily Sutton-Smith[2]. The theatre was established with the goal of creating a professional live theater company in Williamston, Michigan. In 2005, the founders developed their business plan, secured support, and raised community awareness for the project. By 2006, with local business leader Steve Zynda's support, the former retail space at 122 South Putnam Street was transformed into a small theater. The theatre's first full production, Additional Particulars, opened in June 2006[2].

Achievements and Partnerships

The Williamston Theatre gained recognition early on, with the Detroit Free Press naming one of its 2006 productions as one of the Top Ten Shows of that year[2]. In 2007, the theatre partnered with Michigan State University's Department of Theatre to provide job opportunities for early-career theater professionals[2]. This partnership has been instrumental in helping students join Actors' Equity Association.

The theatre won a Thespie Award and a Williamston Enterprise People’s Choice Award in 2007 for its impressive season[2]. In 2008, it received the Robert Busby Award and was recognized by the Williamston Area Chamber of Commerce as Chamber Member of the Year[2]. The theatre has also developed a trilogy of new plays called Voices From The Midwest, which garnered critical acclaim and won numerous awards[2].

Financial and Community Support

As a nonprofit organization, Williamston Theatre relies significantly on donations and contributions, which account for a substantial portion of its revenue[1][3]. In addition to individual donations, the theatre receives grants from organizations such as the Shubert Foundation and the Arts Council of Greater Lansing[4]. The theatre's financial stability is also enhanced by monthly donations, which provide a consistent revenue stream[3].

In recent years, the theatre completed a major capital improvement project to enhance its facilities, and it continues to accept donations for maintenance and development[3]. Donors can support the theatre through tax-deductible contributions, monthly giving, or by participating in its Legacy Circle for estate planning[3].

Governance

Key personnel include Emily Sutton-Smith as Executive Director and Rob Roznowski as President[4]. The theatre operates with a volunteer leadership structure where executive compensation is not reported[1][4].

The Williamston Theatre's commitment to community engagement and artistic excellence has made it a vital part of the cultural landscape in Michigan.
