Michelle Tea, the founder of Dopamine Books, has a long-standing career in literature, having established imprints at City Lights Press and the Feminist Press. Her previous roles included helming Sister Spit and Amethyst Editions imprints, which specifically highlighted queer writing. The establishment of Dopamine Books marked a significant step toward achieving her dream of running her own publishing venture, giving her full control over the publishing process.

Collaboration and Structure

Dopamine Books operates in collaboration with Semiotext(e), a notable independent press. The organization's team includes Michelle Tea, Hedi El Kholti from Semiotext(e), and Beth Pickens, who previously worked with Radar Productions. Dopamine Books also collaborates with freelance illustrators and designers.
