“I found this weird bird on the ground- what do I do?!” It’s peak breeding season for most wildlife, and that includes our local Yellow-crowned Night Herons! These striking birds often nest in colonies high up in tall pine and oak trees. Unfortunately, chicks sometimes fall from the nest or are knocked out by predators or storms. They often suffer injuries from the long drop or predator attacks. 🚨 If you see a baby heron on the ground and you’re able to approach or catch it easily, it definitely needs help. These babies are too young or too hurt to survive on their own. Their parents can’t retrieve them nor can they care for them on the ground at this age. ⏱️ Time is critical. Grounded chicks are highly vulnerable to: • Flystrike (maggots can appear within hours) • Predators like dogs, cats, raccoons, and even ants 📸 Not sure if it needs rescue? 🚗 Wildlife Transporters Needed in Lake Jackson!🦉🦝🐦‍⬛🐇🦆🦌🐢🦅🐿️ We are in urgent need of volunteer transporters, especially in the Lake Jackson area. There’s a high number of injured and orphaned wild animals here, but not enough volunteers to get them to where they need to go. Our licensed rehabilitators are currently overwhelmed caring for dozens of baby animals and critical patients. We need your help to safely transport animals to the proper rehabbers so they can get the care that they deserve. No handling experience is needed- animals will be secured in appropriate containers. There’s no commitment… even once a week helps. Please share with those in the Lake Jackson area that might be interested. If you’re from surrounding areas, that can be very helpful also!
