Pontchartrain Conservancy

Overview

The Pontchartrain Conservancy is a U.S. nonprofit organization, originally founded in 1989 as the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation. Its mission is to drive environmental sustainability and stewardship through scientific research, education, and advocacy, with a focus on the Pontchartrain Basin and coastal regions of Louisiana.

History

The organization was established following a comprehensive report by Tulane University and the University of New Orleans scientists, which highlighted significant environmental degradation in the Lake Pontchartrain Basin—a vast watershed encompassing about 16 parishes and over two million people. The report galvanized community leaders to form a unified entity dedicated to addressing these environmental challenges.

Programs and Achievements

Pontchartrain Conservancy has successfully led initiatives to improve water quality, educate the public, and advocate for sustainable practices. By 2006, the organization's efforts resulted in Lake Pontchartrain being removed from the Environmental Protection Agency’s impaired water bodies list, a significant milestone as the largest body of water in the United States to achieve this status. The organization continues to promote aquatic life recovery and public recreational access to the lake.

Beyond its original mandate, the conservancy has expanded its focus to include coastal sustainability. It developed the Multiple Lines of Defense Strategy for coastal restoration and storm protection, a framework widely adopted by federal and state agencies. Its Water Quality Program focuses on monitoring pollution sources, correcting wastewater issues, and promoting green infrastructure.

The Education Department fosters environmental awareness through public outreach and innovative curricula, leveraging scientific evidence to inform environmental education for students and teachers.

Leadership and Governance

The organization is led by a diverse board of directors, with a strong emphasis on governance practices, including board orientation, ethical transparency, and inclusive recruitment processes.

Current Initiatives

Pontchartrain Conservancy remains active in promoting coastal resilience, engaging in wetland restoration projects, and supporting community events to raise funds and awareness for coastal restoration. Initiatives like the Water Leadership Institute and community-based restoration projects continue to build momentum around environmental sustainability in the region.
