Betti Ono Foundation

The Betti Ono Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to amplifying the work and lives of Black, Brown, Immigrant, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ artists and communities. Founded in 2010 by Anyka Howard, it operates as a hybrid entity combining non-profit and social enterprise structures. The foundation is headquartered in Oakland and is led by Black women and survivors.

Mission and Work

The Betti Ono Foundation focuses on building power through culture, celebrating the culture of everyday people, and fostering community transformation and cultural resilience. It views art-making as a powerful tool for activism, self-determination, and community growth. The organization's programs include artist residencies, youth fellowships, and high-impact cultural change initiatives designed to enhance the leadership capacities of Black and Brown creatives.

Cultural Permanence

One of the foundation's key strategies is the pursuit of "Cultural Permanence," which aims to create wealth-building and cooperative ownership opportunities for BIPOC artists and community-based organizations. This is achieved through strategic land and real estate purchases, aiming to solidify the cultural presence of Black and Brown communities in Oakland.

Collaboration and Partnerships

Betti Ono collaborates with local organizations across public and private sectors to advance shared policy agendas and civic solutions. It has partnered with organizations like CAST to secure permanent spaces for arts and cultural activities, reflecting a commitment to community-rooted cultural belonging.

Financial Status

The Betti Ono Foundation is financially supported primarily through contributions, which constitute about 98.7% of its total revenue. The organization is recognized under the U.S. tax code as a 501(c)(3) entity, making donations tax-deductible.

Leadership

The foundation is led by Anyka Howard, who serves as its CEO. The Board of Directors consists of passionate artists, activists, and educators committed to art, activism, and community transformation.
