Boston Ironsides Rugby Football Club
For almost 20 years, the Boston Ironsides has brought together men from a tremendous range of backgrounds. We are players just out of college, seasoned rugby veterans, and men of every age who've just taken up the sport. We are accountants, engineers, bartenders, designers, students, and more. We are native Bostonians and players from all over this country - and others. We are gay, straight, and somewhere in between. Our differences make us stronger as a team, and every new member adds to that strength.

Overview
The Boston Ironsides Rugby Football Club (BIRFC) is a rugby union team located in Boston, Massachusetts, founded in July 2002. The club is known for its commitment to inclusivity and diversity within the sport, proudly representing the LGBTQ+ community and being an active member of the International Gay Rugby Association and Board (IGRAB). The Ironsides compete in the New England Rugby Football Union (NERFU) as a Division 4 Men's Team, with a roster that typically includes 40 to 60 members.
History
The Boston Ironsides were established following a collaboration among members of New York's Gotham Knights who aimed to create a gay-friendly rugby club in Boston. Their inaugural competitive appearance was marked by their participation in the Bingham Cup, a significant international tournament for LGBTQ+ rugby teams. In May 2006, the team won the inaugural Bingham Bowl at the Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Championship, which celebrated the legacy of Mark Bingham, an openly gay rugby player who was a hero on September 11, 2001.
After a period of inactivity, the team revitalized its efforts in 2010, leading to increased competitiveness. The Ironsides have participated in multiple Bingham Cups, with notable performances, including a strong showing in the VI Bingham Cup in Manchester, UK, in June 2012. They often field multiple teams and have grown significantly, reaching over 60 members by 2019.
Competitive Performance
The Boston Ironsides have demonstrated their competitive prowess in several tournaments, including the Bingham Cup held every two years. The team has contributed to the growing popularity of rugby as a sport that welcomes all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or background. Their efforts culminated in various placements in tournaments, including a second-place finish in the inaugural NORAM Cup in 2023.
Affiliations
The Ironsides are affiliated with several governing bodies and organizations that promote the sport of rugby:
- World Rugby
- USA Rugby
- New England Rugby Football Union (NERFU)
- International Gay Rugby Association and Board (IGRAB)
These affiliations enable the Ironsides to participate in a wide range of competitive and community-focused events.
Community Engagement
In addition to their on-field activities, the Boston Ironsides are committed to community service and philanthropic efforts. They emphasize building friendships and celebrating diversity both on and off the pitch. The club fosters an environment where players from various backgrounds can come together, break down barriers, and support one another.
Conclusion
The Boston Ironsides Rugby Football Club stands out as a pioneering force in promoting inclusivity within the sport of rugby. Their dedication to fostering a welcoming atmosphere while also striving for competitive excellence illustrates the essence of community and sportsmanship.
