As Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we're honored to share the deeply personal story of POEM Peer Mentor, Spencer Huffman, who bravely invited us to share her story. “I keep seeing posts about maternal mental health month and I wear my PMDD as a badge of honor! I am so thankful for POEM volunteers and the amazing, brave mamas we get to support, but it also doesn’t feel authentic to only post on social media about this (for me). — I remember taking selfies when my daughter was born in late 2020 and wanting her so badly while also feeling so unhappy all at the same time. The constant anxiety, sleep deprivation and sound/touch overwhelm. The isolation and the pandemic. It was hell. It’s still so hard to think about those early months. I feel bad for not missing it, but then again, I don’t feel bad as well. I’m glad I grew through it and I’m a stronger person for it, but it’s so hard to feel like people who don’t experience really understand it.” We share Spencer’s story to remind you: you are not alone. These conversations matter. By speaking our truths, we create space for healing, connection, and hope. And we’re here, always, to support you. 💙 You matter and you deserve support.
