Description

Livermore Lab Foundation

The Livermore Lab Foundation (LLF) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization aimed at supporting scientific research, educational outreach, and technological innovation at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) through philanthropy. Established in 2016, the foundation seeks to advance scientific knowledge and inspire future generations of scientists and engineers by leveraging philanthropic investments in world-class research at LLNL, a national security laboratory sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Mission and Vision

LLF's mission is to advance scientific knowledge and inspire future science and technology leaders by supporting research, education, and innovation at LLNL. Its vision involves a future driven by transformative scientific discoveries and research opportunities for emerging scientists and engineers. The foundation focuses on areas such as breakthrough medical cures, clean energy solutions, and STEM education to enhance national and global well-being.

Strategic Focus Areas

LLF's strategic focus areas align with LLNL's science and technology priorities, including:

  • Medical Cures: The foundation is actively involved in funding research on neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson's. It has supported projects in biomarker identification, multimodal data analytics, and disease interventions, promoting innovative treatments like "brain-on-a-chip" platforms.

  • Clean Energy Solutions: LLF collaborates with LLNL and academic partners to advance clean energy technologies and address climate challenges. It supports research and educational initiatives that align with national climate goals.

  • STEM Education and Innovation: The foundation sponsors scholarships, lab supplies for local schools, and other community programs to foster STEM interest and careers among young people.

History

LLF was conceptualized in 2015 by senior leaders from LLNL and the University of California, following best practices from similar foundations at other Department of Energy laboratories. Its founding board included prominent figures from LLNL and UC, reflecting its collaborative approach to advancing science for public benefit.

Governance

The foundation operates independently, receiving administrative and financial support through a contractual arrangement with the University of California. Its board of directors includes representatives from LLNL, UC, and community leaders, aiming to expand community involvement as it grows.

Funding and Support

Donations to LLF can be restricted to specific projects or unrestricted, allowing the board to use funds at its discretion. Funding is aligned with LLNL's high-priority science and technology goals and follows standard approval procedures. The foundation also engages in partnerships with philanthropic and academic institutions to amplify the impact of LLNL's research.
