Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Oregon

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Oregon is a nonprofit organization that represents the state's Masonic community, with roots dating back to early settlement periods.

History and Development

The first Masonic lodge in Oregon was established after an advertisement was placed in the Oregon Spectator on February 5, 1846, calling for Masons to meet in Oregon City. This led to the formation of Multnomah Lodge #1, with a charter issued by the Grand Lodge of Missouri in October 1846. The charter was brought to Oregon by Brother Joseph Kellogg in 1848[1][2].

By 1850, two more lodges were formed near modern-day Portland. The Grand Lodge of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Oregon was formally established on September 15, 1851, with Berryman Jennings serving as its first Grand Master[1][3].

Masonic Contributions and Activities

Freemasonry in Oregon is dedicated to personal development and community service. Masons are encouraged to be good citizens and to contribute to philanthropic efforts. The organization provides financial assistance, scholarships, and disaster relief, as well as supporting aged care facilities[1][5].

One notable institution is the Masonic & Eastern Star Home, initially opened in Forest Grove in 1922. Although the original building is now leased, a new facility, the Jennings McCall Center, continues to provide care for Masons and their families[1].

Organizational Structure

The Grand Lodge oversees over 100 lodges across Oregon, with more than 5,300 Master Masons. Lodges typically consist of 30 to 80 members and conduct regular meetings that include Masonic ceremonies and community activities[4][5].

Membership and Public Engagement

Membership in Masonic lodges is open to those who have been invited or who have expressed interest. Although Masonic rituals are confidential, lodges often host public events and make their facilities available for community activities[4].

Philanthropy and Community Involvement

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Oregon engage in a wide range of charitable activities, contributing to both local and statewide community needs. Their philanthropy supports disaster relief, educational initiatives, and care for the elderly[1].
