Friends of Odell House Rochambeau Headquarters

The Friends of OHRH was created to provide assistance to the Town of Greenburgh as it works to restore the Odell House and to create a museum about the critical role this house played in the Revolutionary War and Westchester history. THE FRIENDS OF ODELL HOUSE ROCHAMBEAU HEADQUARTERS (OHRH) IS A 501(C)3 ORGANIZATION WHICH WAS FORMED TO ASSIST THE TOWN OF GREENBURGH, NEW YORK, IN THE RESTORATION OF AN IMPORTANT HISTORIC HOUSE. THE ODELL HOUSE, WHICH THE TOWN OWNS, WAS BUILT IN 1732 AND IS ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC SITES. IT WAS THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE COMTE DE ROCHAMBEAU, THE COMMANDER OF THE FRENCH FORCES WHICH CAME TO AMERICA IN 1780, TO ASSIST GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON AND THE CONTINENTAL ARMY DURING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. THE TWO ARMIES MET UP IN GREENBURGH, NY, AT A SITE CALLED THE PHILIPSBURG ENCAMPMENT, AND IT WAS HERE THAT THE TWO GENERALS MET FOR SIX WEEKS SCOUTING THE BRITISH FORCES IN MANHATTAN. CONVINCED THAT THEY COULD NOT DEFEAT THE BRITISH FORCES IN NEW YORK, THEY MADE THE CRITICAL DECISION TO MARCH TO YORKTOWN, VA, WHICH RESULTED IN A DECISIVE VICTORY, ENDING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR.

Together we can preserve and restore this historic site. The Friends of Odell House Rochambeau Headquarters is a 501c3 nonprofit organization founded in 2019 to raise funds for the restoration of the Odell House at 425 Ridge Road Hartsdale NY. Built in four stages 1732 1760 1785 and 1855 the house is historically important for several reasons. During the Revolutionary War the French general le Comte de Rochambeau stayed in the house for six weeks in the summer of 1781 surrounded by his army of 5000 men while General George Washington and the Continental Army camped nearby in Ardsley.
