Dr. Siyabulela Mandela, consultant, public speaker, activist, and great-grandson of Nelson Mandela, joined Premier Susan Holt at St. Thomas University for a discussion on justice, reconciliation, and youth leadership. Students from Fredericton High School, Leo Hayes High School and Oromocto High School were in attendance. The event included a moderated dialogue on empowering young leaders and actionable reparation led by St. Thomas University Students' Union President Lucia Pavon. Dr. Mandela spoke about finding opportunities in a state of crisis to “build bridges instead of barriers.” Each generation decides on its purpose, he said, and then needs to do the work to not betray it and instead fulfill it. “It is often the young people who keep their eyes on the future,” Holt said, “and who are looking at macro issues to tell us ‘This cannot lose importance at this point in time.’” High school students had the opportunity to ask questions and meet Dr. Mandela and Premier Holt following the event. A special thank you to Bernadette Fernandez, a graduate of STU and founder of the Varanda Network, for organizing this trip and event. (fb)

Katie Hanson, BA'25, is proud to wear her T-Ring alongside her dad, Bruce Hanson, BA'97. 💚🎓💛 "My family has a strong and lasting connection with STU, which helped me feel connected to the university even before I became a STUdent. When it came time to choose where to pursue my own BA, it felt like I was continuing a meaningful family legacy by choosing STU," said Katie. "My dad has always been my biggest role model and strongest supporter, so sharing a connection to STU with him carries a lot of meaning. It's inspiring to follow in his footsteps. I feel incredibly grateful to be continuing a legacy while also writing my own." (fb)
