We’re so grateful to the Anchorage Chamber Young Professionals Group for spending a day with us at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska Donation Center, turning chaos into calm while gathering over 300 pounds of clothing and essentials. May is National Foster Care Month, and across the country more than 369,000 young people are navigating the foster system. Studies show that youth with a mentor are 46 percent less likely to use illegal drugs, 52 percent less likely to skip school, and 15 percent more likely to earn higher wages in early adulthood. Here in Alaska, our Sync program connects 14–21-year-olds in Mat-Su, Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks with caring Bigs who help them tap into food banks and housing resources, celebrate first jobs and graduations and, most importantly, have fun together.
