The Chileno Valley Newt Project is a group of volunteers dedicated to assisting California Newts in safely crossing Chileno Valley Road during their annual winter migration from the Chileno Valley hills to Laguna Lake, where they breed. The mission of the Chileno Valley Newt Brigade is to help newts safely cross the road to and from their breeding habitat in Laguna Lake.

Shepherding newts to safety During winter evenings newts in northern Californias Chileno Valley come down from the hills and cross the road to breed in Laguna Lake. Volunteers pick up the newts and move many across to safety. So far in the 20242025 migration season CVNB volunteers have logged over 1500 hours on the road and saved over 5000 newts. as of 252025 Our longterm goal is to create a sciencebased built solution to safely assist the newts in migrating to and from their breeding lake.
