Farmworkers across the country are under attack by Trump’s repressive regime. In March ICE targeted a key leader in Washington’s farmworker struggle, Alfredo Juarez. Known as Lelo, he has joined his family in union organizing activities with Familias Unidas por la Justicia Farmworker Union since he was twelve years old, and has become an important voice for justice in FUJ. In March 2025, ICE violently attacked Lelo as he was dropping his wife off at work, and has since detained him at the notoriously awful Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma. Lelo had given testimony at the state capitol against the H-2A guest worker program, which displaces local immigrant farmworkers, just a few days before his arrest. The community immediately mobilized, and CAGJ members rallied outside the Detention Center with hundreds of others, calling for the release of Lelo and others caught up in ICE draconian attacks on workers. On May 1st, CAGJ joined the huge May Day rally in Seattle to celebrate International Workers’ Day, and we were heartened to see how many people there knew about Lelo’s case. We passed out dozens of leaflets asking folks to keep up the pressure to FREE LELO! And then marched with our beautiful FARMWORKER JUSTICE NOW banner that we painted in last year’s Art & Activism workshop.
