🥟Dumpling lovely to announce! 🌱 Farmers markets serve as powerful economic engines, offering small businesses the chance to grow long before traditional retail might be feasible. FRESHFARM is thrilled to celebrate one of our network producers, Jinlan Wenhua, who recently took that exciting step by opening a restaurant! In 2020, owner Lan Jin began selling frozen, handmade dumplings at area farmers markets as Jinlan Wenhua—encouraged by friends and colleagues who had shared in the delicious results of her cooking. Despite launching during the pandemic, Jinlan quickly found a loyal customer base and expanded to multiple markets across the DMV, including FRESHFARM’s Downtown Silver Spring, Dupont Circle, and Mosaic locations. ✨ "Farmers markets gave us a great opportunity to start our business," shared Lan. "In the past few years, we have been learning the market and customers' demand. We have developed and extended our products, making our products more stable but with a variety of options, and cooperated with local farmers to best support each other. Farmers markets bring us customers, business, experience, in a social and relaxed environment."✨ That steady growth laid the foundation for an exciting new chapter: Jinlan Wenhua recently opened its first brick-and-mortar location—Jinlan Dumplings—in Rockville, Maryland. The new storefront allows Lan and her team to offer a wider menu of freshly prepared items while continuing to serve longtime fans who have supported them from the beginning. Of course, transitioning from farmers markets to a restaurant hasn’t been without its challenges. “Besides the financial investment needed to build a restaurant, there’s tons of hard work needed to create an interesting menu, control food quality, and gain return customers,” Lan shares. “We are learning from the startup phase, but we have gotten a lot of good reviews and good suggestions along the way."
